What is Presidents’ Day?

Presidents’ Day is commemorated each year on the third Monday of February. The day was originally celebrated in honor of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Today, the holiday includes anyone who has ever held the office of the U.S. President. That said, celebrations vary by state, with some honoring Washington and Lincoln individually.

Have a favorite president? Why not incorporate some of their favorite dishes into your meals today? It is said that George Washington enjoyed fish and eggs, while Lincoln loved a freshly picked apple. President Taft started with a mighty breakfast each day, while JFK almost always had soup for lunch. You could also opt to make a patriotic dessert such as these star cookies or Lincoln’s favorite almond cake.

Take a Virtual Field Trip

There are all sorts of presidential places you can visit, without leaving the comfort of home. You can take a virtual tour of the White House, with access to all the public rooms on the Ground and State Floors. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum offers a virtual tour with walkthroughs, audio clips, and guidance for teachable moments. You could also explore the home of Washington, Mt. Vernon.

We are fortunate to live in an area rich in presidential history. High on a beautiful hilltop, you’ll find the William Howard Taft National Historic Site. This is the place where President Taft was born and raised. The Ohio History Center will be celebrating Presidents’ Day with esteemed presenters and activities throughout the day.
